My research career

Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Valladolid

María José Cocero is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Valladolid. Director of the LOU BioecoUva Research Institute. President of the Working Party High Pressure Technology of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. Editor for Europe of the Journal of Supercritical Fluids.

María José, stands out in her training activity, she has supervised 41 theses. 30% of the Ph.D. graduates are working in industry, 30% are senior researchers in research centers and 30% belong to the academic world. 5 are full professors, 3 are Ramón y Cajal, one is Beatriz de Galindo, 2 are Juan de la Cierva, and 3 come from the Marie Curie program. She has participated in 5 European projects, coordinating the project “intensification of the extraction and formulation processes of active compounds from wine processing” WINESENSE. She has received the IchemE water award London 2007, and as director of the PressTech Research Group, the UVa Social Council award in 2013.

Since 2018, she is a Visiting Professor at Kumamoto University. International Research Organization for Advanced Science and Technology (IROAST). Maria Jose has been on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Supercritical Fluids (2006-2016), until becoming Regional Editor. Since 2013 Editorial Board of Industrial Crops and Products.

She has participated in international educational programs and courses: Socrates Intensive in High Pressure Technology (1999-2014), organized by WP High Pressure Technology EFCC for the training of PhD students in high pressure topics. Since 2015 European Summer School in High Pressure Technology.

María José has organized the international congresses: 5th International Symposium in Chemical Engineering and Pressure Processes, 2007, Segovia, Spain; PROSCIBA Iberoamerican meeting in supercritical Fluids 2007, Iguasu, Brazil; 10th International Conference on Renewable Resources and Biorefineries 2014, Valladolid; She is member of scientific committees of international congresses in chemical engineering and supercritical fluids.

Fields of expertise

  • Development of processes and products in the field of Bioeconomy, such as the ultra-fast biomass fractionation process in supercritical water.
  • Intensification of processes through the implementation of new technologies, such as the microwave pretreatment process for the extraction of value-added compounds.
  • Development of new materials using supercritical fluids, such as new polymers from extractable sources.
